Janice Moorhead Art
Originally from Montreal followed by three years in Ottawa, I relocated to a lovely community in the Gatineau Hills close to Wakefield. In 1979 I received an honors degree in visual arts from the University of Ottawa. I have been a practicing artist for over 40 years. In 1985 I discovered glass, and having developed a layering
technique which replaced the traditional soldered joint, I became known across Canada as a glass artist.
In terms of painting, I consider myself to be an emerging artist. Certainly the visual vocabulary of my glass art has found a way into my recent paintings. Two aspects stand out the most, story-telling and transparency with the play of light. That being said, I have fallen in love with painting, because it is a much freer form of expression. When I paint I am in a world of my own, but upon completion I hand the work over to an audience.
Over the many years of selling my glass work, I became aware of the viewers desire to find "meaning" and connection. They would often make up their own personal stories which may or may not have had anything to do with my original intention. In a similar way, my current series of paintings, titled, "Interiors" uses the "room" to explore human narrative, creating an atmosphere that
transports the viewer into a world of interpretation.
I have always been fascinated by the play of light on glass, as well as the nature of its transparency. Similarly, acrylic paint can be applied in several transparent layers. In my current series, shadows play a strong role, transforming the mundane flat surfaces of wall and floor into a dazzling display of light and dark. Material and immaterial often blur together, creating works that are at once idiosyncratic and unsettling.
